Cosmos Hub explores a diverse security model to promote the value of ATOM.
Exploring a diversified security model of Cosmos Hub to promote innovation in blockchain security
Cosmos Hub is actively exploring various inter-chain security solutions to meet different needs and enhance the value capture ability of ATOM. Recently, the product head of Informal Systems initiated a discussion on the Cosmos Hub forum regarding the ways consumer chains can join, proposing two new solutions: permissionless and lightweight permission.
Permissionless schemes allow developers to launch consumer chains directly by submitting transactions, and validators can freely choose to join. This method is simple and open, but may require developers to actively communicate with validators. Lightweight permissioned schemes require the launch of consumer chains through governance proposals, and validators who vote in support will automatically join the new chain. This method leverages existing governance mechanisms but sets certain thresholds.
In addition, a "Top-N" solution has been proposed, requiring that the top n% of concentrated validators must run the consumer chain, while other validators can choose to join or exit. These new solutions have their own characteristics in terms of security and flexibility compared to the existing replication security solutions.
Copying security requires all validators to run each consumer chain, which offers the highest security but at a higher cost. Selective joining security allows validators to choose independently, providing greater flexibility but facing security volatility issues. Mesh security allows cross-chain staking, which is a recently popular innovative model.
In the future, Cosmos Hub may adopt a diversified security model, including various solutions such as replicated security, permissionless participation, and lightweight permissioning, to accommodate different security needs while enhancing the value of ATOM. This diversified strategy will contribute to the further development and innovation of the Cosmos ecosystem.
