Texas sheriff violently opened Bitcoin ATM: To recover $25,000 in scam funds
[Chain News] On June 20, news broke that the sheriff of Jasper County, Texas, used cutting tools to forcibly dismantle a Bitcoin ATM machine, attempting to recover $25,000 defrauded from local residents. The victims' families fell victim to a scheme impersonating government officials and transferred money to the scammers through the machine. Sheriff Chuck Havard seized approximately $32,000 in cash from the machine based on a search warrant but admitted that the location of the scammers has not yet been determined. The ATM operator is Bitcoin Depot, and the incident has sparked controversy in the community, with some questioning the legality of the law enforcement actions. The sheriff emphasized that he will use all resources to combat fraud targeting residents in the jurisdiction.
